Tesla marked a significant milestone in its India journey with the launch of its first public charging station in Mumbai, unveiled today at One BKC, one of the city’s most prominent commercial hubs. The move signals the company’s intent to lay the groundwork for widespread EV adoption, even as its vehicles remain a few months away from becoming a common sight on Indian roads. The site features four V4 Supercharging stalls (DC fast-charging) and four Destination Charging stalls (AC slow-charging), offering flexibility to Tesla owners depending on their charging needs. Superchargers deliver peak speeds of up to 250 kW, starting at ₹24/kW, while the Destination Chargers offer 11 kW at ₹14/kW.
“This is just the beginning,” said Isabelle Fan, Director, Tesla South East Asia, at the Mumbai launch. “We have customised it for Indian roads and the Indian liking. We are planning to roll out the editions by the end of this year.”
Tesla’s Supercharger network is known globally for its seamless user experience, owners can simply plug in to begin charging automatically. The Tesla app lets users monitor charging status, check stall availability, receive completion notifications, and manage payments, all in real time. Each vehicle is programmed to auto-route to available Superchargers and precondition the battery for faster top-ups.
The launch of this Mumbai station is the first in a planned network of eight supercharging sites across India, part of Tesla’s strategy to enable cross-country EV travel. The company claims an impressive 99.95% uptime across its global charging infrastructure. For reference, the Model Y, Tesla’s first offering for India, can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes using the Supercharger. That’s enough for five round trips between Mumbai Airport and the Gateway of India.
While the infrastructure is ready, actual deliveries are still in the pipeline. Tesla has opened its online Design Studio across India, where users can now customise and order the Model Y, with prices starting at ₹59.89 lakh. Deliveries are expected to begin in phases starting Q3 2025, with priority given to Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Gurugram.
Tesla is also offering a free wall connector with every new car purchase, enabling daily at-home charging and reducing reliance on public stations.
For those eager to get a closer look, the Tesla Experience Center at Maker Maxity, BKC (Unit G 1B, 2 North Avenue) is now open from 11 AM to 8 PM daily. India may still be months away from seeing Tesla cars on the roads but the fast lane is officially open.
