A villa is the most singular kind of home. It begins with one owner and one piece of ground. How you wake, where you eat, when you want quiet: these decide the plan. The site decides the rest. The plan is not carried over from another house.

The measure here is restraint. A room is judged by its proportion, by how light enters it in the morning and leaves it in the evening, by the weight of the material under your hand. Ornament is not the point. When a house is drawn well, it does not need to announce itself.

Before anything is drawn, the ground is understood. Where the slope falls. Which trees stay. Where the sun sits late in the afternoon, and where the wind comes from. A villa is set into that reading rather than dropped onto it. The house takes the shape the land already suggests.

Plans open around courtyards. Roofs deepen into shade. Walls are placed to hold privacy on one side and open completely on the other. Materials are chosen for how they age, not how they photograph. Detail is where the work shows: a threshold, a joint, the line where one surface meets another. Craft is closer to the hand than to the eye.

Indoors and outdoors are not separate rooms here. A courtyard carries light into the centre of the plan. A terrace becomes the place most used. Shade and planting cool the air before it reaches you, and the garden is drawn at the same time as the walls. Living moves outward through the day and settles back in at night.
